Description
The Bat-Signal may be a gimmick..but, it's a 'gimmick' that WORKS.
the point of this joke, is that the police use the Bat-Signal as some sort of pager.
and, it's usually because they are faced with a problem that they can't handle, and are calling Batman to handle it.
the cynical would call this: "The LAZY and COWARDLY Cops are calling Batman to cover their a**es."
but, I respectfully disagree.
While most cops can be "dirty", there are some good ones who really DO their job right.
and, I wouldn't sell them short in that they often do get the job done.
but, Gotham isn't any normal city. it's plagued by super-criminals
and, even NORMAL crime lords who know how to twist the justice system into their favor.
the GCPD have by now acknowledged that some crimes are too big and/or complicated for them.
SO, they call in Batman to do the job that they just can't.
Example: The police want to search a house for evidense, but can't get a warrant.
SO, they call Batman, because he doesn't need a warrant to get evidence.
OR, The police have this murder mystery, and they are coming up with no leads.
so, they call Batman to get his opinion on it, and hopfully uncover "something" that they missed.
and, of course..a Super-Strong Metahuman is trashing times square.
yeeah, the police are certainly going to call BATMAN to handle that one.
BUT, make no mistake. the police don't abuse the signal.
they aren't going to call Batman to get a cat out of a tree or anything.
even Commissioner Gordon has stated that "Batman handles REAL crimes."
Although, the Bat-Signal serves another purpose than just being a glorified pager.
Due to the signal shining over the city where EVERYONE can see.
the signal is at time left on for hours, as a silent reminder that Batman IS out there.
THEN, it becomes a psychological tool to dissuade criminals on the streets.
and, as a symbol of hope for law abiding citizens, and makes them feel safer.
on a much DEEPER level, the Bat-Signal "symbolizes" the alliance of trust that Batman and his allies have
with the Gotham City Police Department, making him/them deputized enforcers of the law..and, not just "vigilantes"
(SO much better than the "Bat-Phone", I can tell you.)
